Join our Board!

Join our board to make a difference and help Second Life shape a stronger future for our organization and Georgia’s pets.

Help us shape Second Life’s next chapter.

Second Life has grown tremendously over the past 15 years, and our board is growing along with us. We’re continuing to put stronger processes and structure in place, so flexibility is important.

We are still growing our board structure, too.

We’re looking for people who are comfortable joining a working board, helping develop new processes and balancing good governance with the practical realities of running a busy nonprofit thrift store.

This isn’t a board where members simply attend meetings and sit on the sidelines. We want people who will ask questions, share ideas, participate in projects and help strengthen Second Life for the future.

You may be a good fit if you…

● Care about our mission

You believe in second chances and want to make a difference for animals in our community.

● Like being involved

You’re ready to actively participate, ask questions and share ideas to help us grow the board.

● Bring a perspective

Your experience, skills, connections and your perspectives can help make Second Life stronger.

This is an evolving board without a formal structure. Let’s just say we aren’t the formal, corporate-style boards that are common in larger corporations. You should be flexible, willing to put in the time required and believe in teamwork, kindness, inclusion and second chances.

About Second Life

Second Life was created to make a difference for animals. We operate an upscale thrift store, selling donated items with the mission to provide financial grants to animal rescues, spay/neuter efforts, outreach programs and other animal welfare efforts in Georgia.

Position Summary

Second Life is looking for passionate, committed people who want to use their experience and skills to make a difference for animals throughout Georgia.

This is the first significant expansion of our Board of Directors, and we’re looking for people who want to be part of this next chapter with us. We’re a small nonprofit, and our Board structure and processes are still evolving. We don’t have everything figured out, and we don’t expect new Board members to either. We’ll learn, evolve, and build stronger Board practices together.

The Board’s role is governance, not the day-to-day management of our stores. Board members help guide Second Life’s long-term direction, provide financial and strategic oversight, participate in committees and projects, and bring their individual knowledge and experience to the organization.

We’re especially interested in people with experience in finance, human resources, real estate, business management, legal, marketing and communications, nonprofit governance, fundraising, and other areas that can help Second Life grow and thrive.

Board Commitment

  • Attend regular Board meetings, generally four per year
  • Participate in at least one committee, task force, or special project
  • Review materials before meetings and actively participate in Board discussions and decisions
  • Plan to commit approximately 4–8 hours per month, although some months may require more time

What We’re Looking For

  • Good judgment, integrity, and follow-through
  • A collaborative approach and willingness to ask questions, share ideas, and learn
  • Comfort working with a small nonprofit where our Board structure and processes are still evolving
  • Willingness to actively contribute your time, skills, and experience
  • Welcoming and respectful of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • A genuine commitment to Second Life’s mission and animal welfare

Other Requirements

  • Board members must be aligned with Second Life’s mission, values, and commitment to animal welfare and reducing pet overpopulation. This includes our support of spay/neuter, rescue, and adoption and our position against the breeding and sale of companion animals.
  • Make an annual personal contribution to Second Life at a level that is meaningful to you
  • Prior Board experience is helpful, but it isn’t required. We’re most interested in finding people who believe in what we do and are ready to be active, engaged members of the Board.
  • Positions will be filled on a rolling basis as we build our expanded Board, with new terms expected to begin in early 2027.
  • If this sounds like a good fit and you’re interested in using your skills to make a difference for animals, complete our Board application.
  • And, of course, you must love rescue animals.

Board Treasurer (Volunteer)

The Quick Details: 4–10 hours a month | 3-year term | Looks after high-level financial strategy, not daily bookkeeping.

If you love animals and have a knack for numbers, we need you! We’re looking for a thoughtful Treasurer to join our Board. You will help us make smart choices with our resources, spot financial trends, and ensure our thrift store sales translate into maximum support for Georgia’s rescue pets.

Organization: Second Life Thrift Store (Avondale Estates, GA) Position: Volunteer Board Treasurer Term: Three-year term, eligible for re-appointment for one additional term Time Commitment: Approximately 4–10 hours per month

Second Life was created to make a difference for animals. We operate an upscale thrift store, selling donated items with the mission to provide financial grants to animal rescues, spay/neuter efforts, outreach programs, and other animal welfare efforts in Georgia.

Second Life is looking for a financially savvy, thoughtful person to serve as Treasurer of our Board of Directors and use their experience to help make a difference for animals throughout Georgia.

The Treasurer is a voting member and officer of the Board who provides financial oversight and helps the Board understand Second Life’s financial position, performance, and long-term sustainability. This includes reviewing financial statements and budgets, monitoring financial trends, identifying financial risks and opportunities, and helping the Board make informed decisions about the organization’s resources and future.

This is a governance and oversight role. The Treasurer does not manage Second Life’s day-to-day finances, bookkeeping, staff, or store operations. Because our thrift store and online sales provide the primary funding for our mission, however, the Treasurer plays an important role in helping the Board understand their financial performance and how it affects our ability to fund animal welfare organizations throughout Georgia.

Like all Board members, the Treasurer participates actively in Board discussions and decisions and contributes their individual knowledge and experience to the organization.

  • Review financial reports and other Board materials before meetings and come prepared to participate
  • Participate in financial planning, budgeting, and annual financial review as appropriate
  • Participate in financial or other Board committees, task forces, and special projects as needed
  • Plan to commit approximately 4–10 hours per month, although some months may require additional time
  • Experience in accounting, finance, banking, bookkeeping, business ownership, financial management, or a related area
  • Ability to understand and interpret financial statements and budgets
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to explain financial information clearly to people with different levels of financial knowledge
  • Sound judgment, integrity, accountability, and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of nonprofit financial management and governance, or a willingness to learn
  • Welcoming and respectful of diverse backgrounds and perspectives
  • Genuine commitment to Second Life’s mission and animal welfare
  • Prior Board or nonprofit experience is helpful, but it isn’t required. We’re most interested in finding someone with the financial knowledge and judgment to help us responsibly oversee the resources entrusted to Second Life and who is ready to be an active, engaged member and officer of the Board.
  • This position requires a background check.
  • If this sounds like a good fit and you’re interested in using your financial skills to make a difference for animals, complete our Board application.

If you have a knack for organization and love animals, we need you! We are looking for a detail-oriented Secretary to join our Board and help keep our operations on track. The Secretary coordinates meeting minutes and Board materials, maintains important Board records, tracks Board terms and elections, and helps ensure required notices and documentation are completed in accordance with Second Life’s Bylaws and policies.

Accurate and consistent recordkeeping helps protect Second Life, strengthens accountability, and supports effective Board governance. Like all Board members, the Secretary participates in Board discussions and decisions and contributes their individual knowledge and experience to the organization.
