Exploring North Carolina’s Wetlands: May Paddle Events Recap

Lake Mayo - Roxoboro, NC

On Saturday, May 9, friends of the Carolina Wetlands Association gathered at Lake Mayo Park near Roxboro, NC, for a fun afternoon paddling along the lake’s beautiful living shorelines. We were thrilled to be joined by herpetology expert Thomas Reed and freshwater mussel scientist Kim Morgan, who introduced us to many fascinating discoveries along the shoreline, including giant floater mussels and even a bald eagle sighting. After the paddle, several participants continued the fun at nearby Black Creek Brewery, where we enjoyed snacks, beverages, and the chance to connect and get to know one another.

Robertson Millpond Preserve - Wendell, NC

On Friday, May 15, more than 20 wetland supporters joined Carolina Wetlands Association for a beautiful evening kayaking among the cypress trees at the wetland treasure, Robertson Millpond Preserve. Along the way, participants spotted prothonotary warblers, amphiumas, and sunfish while enjoying the unique beauty of this special habitat. Special thanks to volunteer Thomas Reed with Wake County Open Space and Parks for hosting the event and sharing his knowledge with the group.
